Morgan's demo turned us all into thinking-aloud-writers today. Using the reading think-aloud model, he asked, "what happens when students see the writing process modeled using think-aloud strategies?".

We warmed up by annotating an "easy" e.e. cummings poem. We discussed how daunting the task was for many of us, and how nice it would have been to think-aloud through the process. We also looked at solid research that added to the summer's theme of using models effectively.

Morgan modeled the writing process using the think-aloud strategy while devising a five minute fiction story. It was about nightmares and we laughed a lot.

Morgan then had us get into groups for the writing activity. He employed Beth Lewis as the expository writing/thesis statement leader, Jack Martin as the poetry leader, and Jason Tyler as the narrative description leader. We joined a group accordant with our greatest level of discomfort with the genre. The teacher-leader received a random topic and then modeled the writing process through thinking aloud and allowing us to give input and suggestions. We (the students) then received our own random topic and employed the strategies for our own writing.

We had fun and the time went quickly--as is always the case with great demos. Bravo, Morgan!
